ADHD is a behaviour disorder in which there is a constant pattern of inattention and impulsivity that is more frequent and more severe than is typically seen in children at the same level of development .ADHD is similar to ADD. The difference is that children with ADHD have a hyperactivity component on top of the ADD symptoms. ADHD is a behaviour disorder NOT a learning disability. It is the impulsive and hyperactive behaviour which can lead to difficulties in school.

A child with ADHD is often described as bouncing off the walls as they do not seem to be able to sit still for any length of time. They also talk excessively making them difficult to understand at times, especially when their train of thought or topic switches mid-conversation. Another problem in both the home and school environment is that they constantly interrupt people before they have a chance to finish what they were trying to say, whether they are interrupting a teacher, parent or friend doesnt make a difference to them.

Children with ADHD generally do not perform well in school, especially if they are undiagnosed and are not on any treatment. Doing poorly at school often leads to bullying which results in poor self esteem. It is important for these children to get help because of this. Poor self esteem can be very destructive to a young child and can persist into adulthood.
The ADHD child is typically seen trying to do more than one task at the same time with an end result of not having finished any of the tasks.

There are generally 3 types of ADHD:

1. ADHD-combined type: this child is inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive. This
child is always active as though driven by a motor.

2. ADHD-Inattentive type: this child battles with inattention and is impulsive but not
hyperactive.

3. ADHD-Hyperactive-inattentive type: this child displays impulsivity and hyperactivity but not
inattention.
